2011 MEANS Volunteer of the Year

2011 MEANS Volunteer of the Year - Ofelia PalabricaWe honor Ofelia Palabrica as she celebrates her 8 years milestone at MEANS (since 2003). Ofelia has contributed many things of value to MEANS. She has brought to MEANS her expertise as an accountant. Ofelia helps in the monthly journal processing and sees to it that all the deposits and entries are done and entered accurately in the MEANS books.
Ofelia has provided the process for our banking records so that Jim, MEANS board treasurer, is able to audit our monthly banking even if he is based outside of the US in a timely manner. Ofelia has been sending financial documents to our board treasurer when he was first based in Singapore, then to East Timor, Indonesia and now to Malawi, Africa. She makes sure that all our financial records are properly recorded for the annual external auditor and ECFA audit.
Ofelia is an accountant by profession. She graduated from University of San Agustin, Iloilo City, Philippines and is currently employed as Comptroller of a manufacturing & distributing company in Illinois. The eldest in a family of six, Ofelia grew up in Buenavista, Guimaras, Iloilo. Ofelia, who is now a widow, has 2 children and 3 grandchildren.
Ofelia shares: “Being a volunteer means a lot to me. It gives me joy when I think that doing the small things that I do best will make a big difference in the lives of others. It is a thrill and a blessing to hear from visiting missionaries, how I have been a part in helping them in their work to spread Christianity to different continents. Of course, the 4 F’s: fun, fellowship, friendship and food during workdays.”
At the retreat, MEANS gave Ofelia a statue of Jesus washing the feet of a disciple. The statue is symbolic of what we all do at MEANS as a volunteer. We are servants of the Lord Jesus Christ and also servants of one another.
